Douglas Ireland Quinney of Guilford, NY passed away on September 20 at his home on North Pond at the age of 68. Douglas was born in Sidney, NY to Barbara and Donald Quinney on January 30, 1946. He attended Bainbridge-Guilford High School and graduated in 1964. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in History at the University of Rochester. Douglas began his 32-year teaching and coaching career in Sidney High School in 1969. He taught Social Studies, Comparative Government, Government, and Senior Survival during his tenure at Sidney. Douglas also served as a Social Studies Department Chairman. Additionally, he served as Athletic Director between 1995-2001. Douglas was a track and field icon, not only in the local area, but across the entire state of NY and beyond. Douglas had numerous coaching achievements over the years, which include leading his top-ranked track & field teams in NYS and Nationally: Boys & Girls Varsity Spring Track & Field Coach at Sidney High School/14 State Champions; 2 All-Americans Boys & Girls Varsity Winter Track & Field Coach at Sidney High School/ 16 State Champions; 1 National Champion Additionally, he served as an Empire State Games Central Region Girls' Assistant Track Coach; Meet Director of NYS Winter Track Championships; NYS Girls' Winter Track Coordinator; NYS representative to the U.S. Coaches Association All-American Selection Committee. Awards received include the WCDO Coach of the Year (1989-1990; 2000-2001); NYS Catholic High School Athletic Association Special Recognition Award (1994); Niagara Association of USA Track and Field "Section Four Girls' Track Coach of the Year" award; and NYS Coaches Association Honor Award for Track and Field. He was also inducted into the Section Four Hall of Fame. Douglas' involvement in the community included: volunteer work for the Sidney United Way Drive (Chairman, Board of Directors) and North Pond Lake Association (Vice President, Board of Directors). He was also involved with various professional organizations, such as the Sidney Teachers Association, NYS Coaches Association, Southern Tier Athletic Administrators Association, NYS Athletic Administrators Association, and U.S. Track Coaches Association. Douglas is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marilyn Quinney of Guilford, NY; daughter and son-in-law Tammy and Patrick Sweeney of Tewksbury, NJ; daughter and son-in-law Theresa and Greg Danylak of Rochester, NY, along with their children/his grand-children Rowan and Maeve Danylak; niece Ashley Lodovice and her husband Ian Lodovice, along with their daughter Clara; nephew Jeremy Mohler and his wife Frances Mohler, along with their son Mason; uncle Dean Quinney of Purcellville, VA; nephews Todd, Shawn and Timothy Quinney all residing in Virginia; and stepmother Joan Quinney of Stuart, FL. Douglas is preceded in death by his parents Barbara and Donald Quinney as well as his sister Gwendolyn Quinney. Douglas enjoyed his retirement years spending time with family, volunteering on the Sidney High School Track & Field team coaching hurdlers, relaxing/fishing on the lake, dinner club get-togethers and training/taming his infamous "chippies." Friends are invited to call on Saturday, September 27 from 10 a.m. to noon at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main Street, Sidney, NY.
